Our Wine Store

The Brunswick East Wine Store at 472 Lygon Street is the product of lots and lots and lots of hard work. After scribbling a signature on a lease towards the end of 2013, the Brunswick East Wine Store ever so slowly began to take shape, with Tim spending many an hour up a ladder after working at the Seddon Wine Store or up at the Bindi winery in the Macedon Ranges. And it was up a ladder that Time would chat to curious passer’s by and talk through what it was all about; bringing something new and fresh to the community.

Brunswick East Wine Store is a labour of love and a family affair. Tim has almost 20 years working with wine - selling, growing, making, matching with food, drinking, reading, writing, talking and studying. More often than not, it will be Tim’s face you see in the store with apologies in advance if The Little Red Crew - Imogen and Henry - get tangled up in your feet.

Brunswick East Wine Store offers quality, value for money wines, craft beer and the odd bespoke spirit; no agenda’s here, it just has to be smokin hot and value for money. And all have been personally vetted by Tim. Every single one of them.

It’s nice to work local. It’s nice to be local. We simply love living, and now working, in Brunswick.

The Stuff We Do

Wine

It’s a great big wine world out there. So when you have a finite space to put this wine, the wine needs to be ACE and simply represent great value for money. There aren’t any wine agendas here because we love all wine, but saying that there is a real focus on small independent producers who have a real sense of ‘product of place’ and who are kind to the land from where their fruit comes from; minimal intervention is key.
So be it from Ribera del Duero or Rutherglen, the Barossa Valley or Bierzo, Alsace or the Adelaide Hills; if it’s ACE and value for money then yes, we want to sell it. A+B=C you might say.

Craft Beer

Beer has come along way, not only in Australia, but around the world. Gone are the days when the choice added up to the fingers on one hand. Just recently we have seen a beer revolution with backyard brewers all over the world take it a further step and have taken their product to market. And before you know it beer fridges are swelling with fantastic IPA’s, APA’s, Pilsners, Amber Ales and so on and so forth. We love craft beer in Brunswick East!!!

The Wine Bar

For those that have already been through our store you will have seen the bar stools, tables and chairs and the tasting table out the back. Yes. The Wine Bar is here!!!!!

Based on the Italian style Enoteca, all of our wines are available by the glass or the bottle if you so choose. And if you want to have a bottle here you will not be slugged the normal $10 or $15 or even $20 corkage. No no no. The price you see on the shelf or fridge is what you pay. Simples

What we mean about all of our wines being available by the glass is this; the first 4 whites and 4 reds chosen by you, the customer, on Sunday will be poured for the rest of the week. Be it Harewood Riesling, ArFion Pinot Noir, Schwarz Wine Co. Grenache or the Jamsheed Beechworth Shiraz. It’s all there for you to drink.

We will also be offering Sunday Specials, such as Bindi Block 5 Pinot Noir, Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier and even Giaconda Chardonnay. Prices will be determined by what the bottle is worth but invariably nothing over $30ish a glass. It’s very rare to see wines of distinction in a casual, and affordable, environment like the one we will have here.

So in affect, there is no real wine list so to speak, just whats on the shelves or in the fridge. There will also be a short menu filled with cured meats, cheese’s, pickled seafood’s and olives. All the stuff that is yum.

Even if you haven’t been in to our store you would certainly know that bottles is what we are all about; 1084 Bottles to be precise and approximately 108 working hours up a ladder with a pencil, a paint brush and a tin of paint - with the odd dab or turps here and there. And all done to a soundtrack featuring the likes of Springsteen, INXS, T-Rex, The Who, the Beastie Boys and You Am I; an eclectic playlist to go with an eclectic range.

We Want You!!!!!

We are currently looking for that all-rounder and ACE Wine Star to join our little crew.

You need to be wine savvy, wine friendly and wine service driven and effectively have a passion for all things wine. And beer. And Bespoke spirits. And customer service. And wine bar action.

Meet The Maker Sessions - Jon Baxter of Airlie Bank Wines

Okidoke folks, for our final Meet The Maker Sessions for 2018, it is with great pleasure that the producer be one that has lined the shelves and fridges ever since we opened back in 2014 - Airlie Bank Wines from the Yarra Valley hosted by one of the WINE STORE | WINE BARS favourite wine person in Jon Baxter.

Comprising of five wines; Savvy B, Skinsy Pinot Gris, Cuvée Sparkling NV, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc, the Airlie Bank wines are, as far as this wine professional thinks, are possibly some of Australia’s best value wines in terms of quality and certainly price. These wines not only consistently deliver varietal expression but also through wine maker Tim Shand’s deft touch present wines that year after year throw slightly cheeky and different dynamic flavours in the glass that demands another bottle to be opened. Just because!!!

So make sure you swing by this Saturday November 10th from 3-6ish and have a sip and a chat with Jon where we are sure that you will like the wines as much as we do.

Melbourne Cup Day 2018 - You Bet We’re Open!!!!

It’s that time of the year again when most of Melbourne take a long-long-weekend and throw a buck or two in to a Melbourne Cup Sweepstake. So when you head in to the WINE STORE | WINE BAR today or tomoz, you too can also throw in a buck to win something wet and ace:

Meet The Maker Sessions - Dom Valentine of Valentine Wines

With another Saturday comes another Meet The Maker Sessions with this Saturday to be hosted by Dom Valentine of Valentine Wines.

Dom’s wine journey started in 2010 while working in Rudesheim and Geisenheim in Germany’s Rheingau region. In that year, Dom worked for both both Weingut Josef Leitz and Weingut Georg Breuer - two of the region’s most respected producers. Each of those experiences was inspiration to return to Australia and pursue his Valere project whereby he sourced grapes each year from a different vineyard in Victoria to explore the lessons learned in Germany.

Fast forward some years and Dom has added a deliciously perfumed Heathcote Grenache and a wildly ace Chardonnay from Victoria’s highest altitude vineyard in Whitlands in the NE of Victoria. Both wines add to Dom’s unmistakable light touch when it comes to producing wines that have true terroir expressions.

So as Molly would say, do yourself a favour and swing on by the WINE STORE | WINE BAR this Saturday, October 27th from 3-6ish and have a gander of three of our fave wines for 2018.

Meet The Maker Sessions - Dave Mack of ArFion Wines

Yet another one of the WINE STORE | WINE BARS best mates is taking over the pouring duties this Saturday October 20th from 3-6ish for another Meet The Maker Sessions. Ladies and Gentleman, we give you Dave Mackintosh of ArFion Wines.

Dave’s philosophy is simple; to try and extend the limitations of style, be considerate to the grapes and land, and to be a strong part of the local wine community. Seems simple and obvious to us, and as we say around here, “It’s not Rocket Surgery after all”.

Not necessarily conforming to an existing style, Dave aims to create wines that have their own thumbprint and can evolve as the seasons do. They are the result of the interpretation of many connections between vintage, style and site.

So make sure you swing on by this Saturday for a wee sip of Dave’s current vintage wines where we have little doubt that you’ll like them as much as we do.

Meet The Maker Sessions - Michael Dhillon of Bindi Wines

The WINE STORE | WINE BAR is turning 4 on October 15th, so to mark this milestone of of the stores fave winemakers, and one of my best mates, Michael Dhillon of Bindi Wines in for a tasting. As many of you will know, Bindi Wines, and Michael who is effectively Bindi, have a very special place in my heart. And it is because of this Michael will be in the WINE STORE | WINE BAR on Saturday, October 13th from 1-4ish where he will pour his new release wines at the tasting bench.

Bindi’, 50 kilometres north-west of Melbourne in the Macedon Ranges, is the family property of the Dhillon family. Originally purchased in the 1950s as part of the larger grazing farm ‘Bundaleer’, ‘Bindi’ is a 170 hectare farm of which 7 hectares are planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Fifteen hectares are dedicated to managed plantation eucalypts for high grade furniture timber whilst the remainder of the land is maintained as remnant bush land and important indigenous grasslands.

The Bindi vineyard is the fundamental focus of the Dhillon family endeavors. The vineyard and winemaking philosophy is to seek balance and purity in the expression of the various individual vineyard sites and this philosophy is applied to farming and conservation at ‘Bindi’; the preservation of the natural harmony.

This tasting is going to be popular so the earlier the better we would advise. On tasting will be Bindi’s new releases which include all of the estate wines - Block 5, Original Vineyard and Dixon Pinot Noirs; Quartz and Kostas Rind Chardonnays and the Pyrette Shiraz from Heathcote. And what better way to celebrate our 4th anniversary then to have Michael pouring his wines. And there may also be a sausage sizzle out the back weather permitting.
